I need something not so elaborate as this to toss little plastic lattice balls with bells in them for my cat. She will bring them back, but so far has resisted even putting them into cups. I'm thinking a wide pan leading to a tube that turns and feeds into a spinning wheel like the old Hot Wheels accelerator they used to have. This could shoot it up a ramp and down the hall. A simple oscillator could move the ramp back and forth to provide variability.
