Breaking News: Aibo Returns in 2008

December 8th, 2007 by Mr Robotics

Sony will be returning the Aibo to production, as the Aibo PS. PS, like in PlayStation. As in PlayStation controllable. According to our sources, it will no longer have removable media cards, but connect through your PlayStation – where you can d/l the photos it takes, u/l new personalities, and play a pick-up match of Resistance: Fall of Man against your pooch, all using the PS3′s and the Aibo’s native WiFi connectivity. You will be able to control it via your PS, and it will be able to email you at work when the burglars break in and try to steal it. It’s also supposed to move quite a bit faster that the ERS-7.

The new li’l guys can be autonomous, voice controlled, or you can remote control it with your PS3′s d-pad (this obviously presumes that you also have a PS3.)

This — if true — has truly made my year. Aibos were my life (and research) for two years. Please tell me this will be OPEN-R capable and that they will return to the RoboCup world. The Naos (www.aldebaran-robotics.com) look pretty cool, but everyone in the Standard Platform League is terrified that they will not be able to walk (let along play soccer). So if the Aibos make a comeback….

Okay, Mr. Robotics, I’ll yield you one Jumbo-size scoop point on this one – if, and only if, it turns out to be true. So far I haven’t been able to dig up a credible, non-English source referencing a valid revival for Aibo in 2008. I hope you’re right.

Halo 3 mention in a PS3 article. Way to stir the fanboy hate. -.^

Anyways, the first Aibo was utilized for the Playstation 2, for one game that only came out in Japan. If I remember correctly (and hell if I’m actually gonna google my facts), it was a crime game where it acted as a police dog.

No, this is a lie. The editor of Stuff magazine (where the rumor first started) admits it was a lie and that the picture wasn’t a real Aibo, not even a prototype, just a guess on how it might look. And SONY still firmly states that Aibo will not be returning to production.
